Seventh annual Fall Hayride is set for October 30

The seventh annual Fall Hayride is scheduled for Saturday, October 30, from 7 to 11:30 pm, In keeping with tradition, this Hayride will have a Halloween theme. The event will be held at Boyert's Farm in Medina.

The Fall Hayride has been sponsored by Cleveland Couples Together (formerly Monotones) for the last seven years. CCT is a social group for gay and lesbian monogamous couples who live in northern Ohio. Bob, a Hayride committee person, stressed, "The Hayride is open to everyone: gay, lesbian, couples, singles... anyone who is interested in a fun country hayride."

"The 1992 Hayride broke all attendance records," according to John A. Barrick, project manager for this year's event. Unfortunately people were turned away at the gate due to the overwhelming response. For this reason, ticket sales for this year will be limited to 250, by advance sale only.

Returning as DJ will be D.D. Fox. Throughout the evening, the Cleveland City Country Dancers will be teaching simple

square dances and showing how the pros do it by giving a few demonstrations. Square and contemporary dancing will continue throughout the evening. Campfires will be available for quiet moments. Apple cider, coffee, donuts, a hot dog, a bag of chips, and a complimentary pumpkin are also included in the Hayride ticket price.

Hayriders may also bring their own beer, coolers, or other alcoholic beverages.

Creative photo mementos can be purchased, and the stables will be open to pet the four-legged animals. Shopping will be available at the Boyert's gift shop, including house plants, arts & crafts, and much more. Also, this year, there will be an opportunity to shop at a table displaying merchandise from Gifts of Athena Bookstore.

Barrick reports that proceeds from last year's Hayride "allowed Monotones-CCT to give over $600 back to the community and to community organizations. Monotones-CCT has been a proud sponsor of the Pride celebration as well as NOCI yearly.

We were also able to give a generous donation to the Lesbian and Gay Community Center to assist them with their rebuilding project."

Gifts of Athena, 5¢ Decision, and Mix Drinkery are selling tickets for the Hayride, which are $13 in advance only. Tickets will

not be available at the door.

The Hayride will take place rain or shine. The DJ, dancing, bookstore, and food are all inside the large, modern barn. For more information about the Hayride or Monotones-CCT, write to P.O. Box 771102, Lakewood, OH 44107-0047 or call 734-7980.

NEA returns grants to

three gay film festivals

Washington-The National Endowment for the Arts has reversed a 1992 decision by the Bush administration and approved grants for three gay and lesbian film festivals.

The National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture, which had threatened a lawsuit over the matter, welcomed the action, saying the original decision had been based on the endowment's "fear of political backlash."

The Oakland, Calif.-based alliance is an umbrella organization that had requested

Monotones gets a new name the original funding on behalf of the Gay

The Monotones, a social group for lesbian and gay couples in Cleveland, has changed its name to Cleveland Couples Together. The name change was brought about by members who felt that the old name did not adequately describe the function of the group.

The Monotones, which received the Chronicle's 1993 Mixed Group of the Year Award, was formed in 1986 by four couples who desired to meet with other couples to share in their common interest of a growing,

monogamous relationship. Over the years, the group grew to over 30 couples.

Thanks to the annual Monotones Hayride, the group has been very proud to give financial assistance to many gay and lesbian causes in the area, such as the Lesbian-Gay Community Center, Pride celebrations, and the Living Room.

and Lesbian Media Coalition in Los Angeles, the New Festival in New York and the Pittsburgh International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival.

The endowment said it will give the alliance the $17,500 the film festivals would have received in 1992.

The grants were rejected last November by former acting chairwoman Anne-Imelda Radice, who was appointed by President Bush after he fired her predecessor, John Frohnmayer. Members of Congress and conservative groups have criticized the federal program for funding gay art.

The endowment said it reversed its decision after Acting Senior Deputy Chairwoman Ana Steele found an "abuse of process" in Radice's rejection of the grants. Radice made the decision after the deadline for notifying grant applicants had passed and the festivals had already occurred, the agency said.

Radice had said the festivals did not "demonstrate artistic excellence and artistic merit worthy of support by this agency." Steele's review did not look into the artistic merit of the festivals.
